Basic Rider Course (BRC)

The Basic rider course (BRC) is designed for people who have never ridden a motorcycle as well as the person who hasn’t ridden in a while and would like to get back in the sport.

The course is approximately 15 hours of instruction. 5 hours of classroom, 10 hours of actual hands-on riding. We provide the motorcycles and helmets. Students who successfully complete the course receive a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) completion card that waives the state of Colorado written and riding portion of their test.

Some Insurance carriers reward people who have completed an MSF course by offering up to a 10% discount off their annual motorcycle insurance premiums. Check with your Insurance carrier to see if they offer this discount.

The classroom portion introduces students to the sport of motorcycling and the various kinds of motorcycles along with their characteristics. Other topics covered are proper riding gear and its benefits, motorcycle controls and their operation, the various situations a rider will encounter and how to handle them, risk management and the effects of alcohol and other substances.

The first day will have students learning the basics such as mounting/dismounting the motorcycle, proper starting and shut down procedure, friction zone and throttle operation, riding/shifting/stopping, maximum braking and cornering.

The second day builds upon the first, with students learning more about correct cornering, limited space maneuvering, signaling and avoiding hazards, followed by a practice session and then being evaluated.

Requirements:

  1. You must be able to ride a bicycle and be reasonably dexterous in order to take the BRC.
  2. There are three course completion requirements: Students must be prompt and on time for all phases of the curriculum.
  3. Students must pass a written test that contains 50 questions that are multiple choice. A score of 80% or better is a passing score.

Students must pass a riding evaluation that consists of four riding exercises that they have done earlier during the course. Students must not earn more than 20 penalty points, drop the motorcycle during the riding evaluation or perform an intentional unsafe act in order to pass.

Required riding gear while participating in the BRC:

  1. ¾ or full face helmet. We provide the helmet if you don’t have one. We will allow you to use your own helmet provided that it is not a half helmet and it meets all of the current safety standards.
  2. Protective eyewear. Your eyes must be protected when riding, especially if you are wearing a ¾ face helmet. If you wear prescription lenses, that is fine, as you will be riding no more than 20 miles an hour at times.
  3. Full fingered gloves.
  4. Long-sleeve shirt and/or jacket.
  5. Long pants with no rips or tears.
  6. Over the ankle boots. Hiking boots are allowed provided that the laces can be tucked in. Cowboy boots are fine provided that they do not have leather soles.
